The Rhine falls near Schaffhausen, where I went in December 2004. The steps leading down to the observation platforms next to the waterfall were very slippery, and we spent a great deal of time going down the stairs step by step, clutching the handrails. We couldn't reach the lowest platform because standing up was impossible on the stairs down. Still, I think it was worth the ordeal, as the waterfall was extraordinarily beautiful at night, something only incompletely shown by any photograph, and we spent many minutes standing at the railing of the platform, looking at the water go by, with its endless rushing shapes.
